Champagne at the fair

Flannel gifts (for you or someone else)

Flannel is so cozy this time of year. Here are five flannel crafts that will make you feel like hunkering down for the winter: coasters, a candle holder, hand warmers, mug sleeves and a decorative pumpkin.

I love the idea of arranging these on a pretty tray and giving them as a unique Fall hostess gift. But, you’ll definitely want to make an extra set for yourself!

I bought flannel material for these crafts. But, you could re-purpose a couple old flannel shirts to save yourself a trip to the fabric store.

Get ready and get crafting

Coasters
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • 4 in x 4 in ceramic tiles
  • 8 in x 8 in flannel pieces
  • Hot glue
  1. Place the flannel face down and place the coaster face down on the flannel.
  2. Fold the corners of the flannel to the center of the coaster and hot glue into place.
  3. Repeat step 2.
Candle holder
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glass jar
  • Votive candle (something pumpkin’y)
  • Rectangle of flannel (approximately 2 in larger than the glass jar)
  • Extra scrap of flannel (long enough to go around the jar)
  • Twine
  • Hot glue
  1. Place the flannel face down.
  2. Wrap the flannel around the jar and hot glue into place. Don’t worry too much about the top side because the lid will cover this.
  3. Fold the bottom side of the flannel under the jar and hot glue into place.
  4. Wrap the flannel scrap around the middle of the jar and hot glue into place.
  5. Tie twine around the top lip of the jar.
  6. Place a votive candle inside the jar.
Hand warmers
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Sewing machine (I promise that this is the only flannel craft that requires a sewing machine!)
  • 5 in x 5 in flannel pieces
  • Thread
  • Rice
  1. Line up two flannel squares wrong-side out and pin.
  2. Sew three sides of the square.
  3. Turn the flannel right-side out.
  4. Spoon approximately 6 T of rice into the flannel pocket.
  5. Fold the rough edge of the open side in. Then, sew the open side of the square.
  6. Toss the hand warmer in the microwave for 20 seconds. Each heat should keep you cozy for 5 to 10 minutes.
Mug sleeves
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Rectangle of flannel (long enough to go around a mug)
  • Stick on velcro
  • Hot glue
  1. Fray the edges of the flannel by pulling a few threads from each side.
  2. Accordion fold the edges of the flannel narrow enough to fit through the mug handle and hot glue into place.
  3. Stick Velcro on the edges of the flannel.
  4. Wrap the sleeve around the mug.
Decorative pumpkin

This flannel craft is perfect for kids!

  • Rectangle of flannel (long enough to to go around the toilet paper)
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Stem (cinnamon stick, cork, real stem, etc.)
  1. Place the flannel face down.
  2. Tear off a couple feet of toilet paper. Then, scrunch it around the roll to make the roll shaped a bit more like a pumpkin.
  3. Turn the roll on its side.
  4. Tuck the sides of the flannel into the center of the roll. Then, continue rolling and tucking.
  5. Push a stem into the center of the roll.
